The Mamidipudi Venkatarangaiya Foundation was established in the year 1981 in memory of Late Prof. Venkataranagaiya, an eminent historian, scholar and teacher. The Foundation is set up to encourage research and basic surveys in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities. Its aim is also to bring out publication on issues of relevance in the area of Social Sciences with a view mainly to focus attention on understanding and analyzing processes of social change. The Foundation has also expanded the scope and contents of its activity in the areas of literacy and education at all levels in the rural areas. It has undertaken rural and community development projects with an emphasis on the poor.
MAMIDIPUDI VENKATARANGAIYA
Mamidipudi Venkatarangaiya was born on 8th January, 1889. He passed the B.A., examination in 1907 in First Class securing a University prize and gold medals. After passing the M.A. examination, he took up a lectureship in Pithapur Raja’s College, Kakinada.
In 1931, he joined the Andhra University as the head of the Department of History, Economics and Politics and served in this capacity till he retired in 1945. His reputation as a profound scholar, a popular teacher and an eminent political scientist reached far and wide. The Bombay University honored him by inviting him to become the first holder of the Sri Pherozeshah Mehta Chair in Civics and Politics in 1949.
Prof. Venkatarangaiya was painstaking and erudite scholar and a prolific writer. His main interest was in Local Government and Federalism. He has made valuable contributions in the fields of Public Administration, Indian Constitutional Development and International Affairs.
In Prof. Venkatarangaiya, we find a rare combination of scholar and researcher; research brought a new insights to his teaching and teaching set the perspective for his research. He conducted several economic surveys of villages. His research in Local Government began at the University of Madras way back in 1925. As the Sri Pherozeshah Mehta Professor of Politics at the Bombay University, he undertook a survey of the personnel of the Bombay Legislature and organized a systematic and scientific study of the First General Election in Greater Bombay.
As a historian he has edited The Freedom Struggle in Andhra Pradesh in four volumes. His introduction to these volumes is considered as an authoritative document on the Freedom Movement. He has also written in Telugu the History of Freedom Movement in India. He has translated Kautilya’s Arthasastra into Telugu. He was awarded Padmabhushan by the Government of India and was also recipient of Honorary D. Litt. from Andhra and Sri Venkateswara Universities.
Prof. Venkatarangaiya’s interests are wide and his activities varied. In his long career he held several administrative positions including that of the Dewan of the State of Vizianagaram with grace and dignity. His interest and active association with the co-operative movement, the Rural Reconstruction Association, Nellore and the Theosophical Society are well known. Several teachers’ and students’ associations have benefited by his constant guidance and co-operation in their manifold activities.
